From Dumai Cris and I took the ferry to Melaka, which he wanted to visit because it was the most important trading city in the old days of the East Indian Trading Company and the VOC (the Dutch variant). So of we went.
Arriving there the first thing that struck us was the diffence betwee those two neighboring countries. Inodnesia is very remote and still very underdeveloped in many ways. This brings good things, like authentic places and untouched area's (although declining rapidly). But also some no so good things, like poverty, lots of pollution and a atmosphere rather challenging for travelling. You fill in the blank spots.
In Melaka it was a different world. Although burdened under similar Colonial powers, like the Portugese, the Dutch (which weren't very nice) and latter the English, the atmosphere was more open. People were willing and able to speak english and the prosperity was cleary visible. We visited many old places that were witnesses of the Colonial era and the later settelment of other cultures like the Chinese. Very interesting stuff like an old Potugese (mixture) settlement, where the decendents still have a potugese malaysian language.
Of course we had some excellent Indian and Chinese food in this multi cultural city.
Just arrived in Kuala Lumpur tell you more about this in a bit.

Hai lieverd,
What an travel experiences! Great to see them through your eyes as much as is possible.
We booked our vacation to Cancun, Meggico from Aug 1st to the 16th. !6 days of leisure in all-inclusive resort and of course an unknown luxury to the American folks here, but for our Dutchies a common necessity and not nearly enough to wind down from the daily chores. Probably a little to civilized pour toi, mais alas.....
