City of the future

Imagine Time Square in New York, but then a whole city like that!!!

The worlds biggest permanent light show (guiness book of records) can be seen on the amazing skyline. Best to be seen from Victoria (yeah HK is also a former British colony) Hill after sunset. Take the train down on the steepest railway in the world, which is a rollercoaster-like experience.

In the city (which is divided amongs several island (with the most one famous Hong Kong island) and the main land (Kowloon) live 6 million people, very, very densely packed together. It is a consumers paradise (or hell), with the emphasis on fashion with the capital F, eating and technology comes far after. The Hong Kongnese workd hard (10 hours a day, 6 days a week for very little -about 4 euro's an hours if you have a reasonably good job) it's the 'Hong Kong Style'. They all look preoccupied and busy (say stressed) and they only seem to be able to smile when they use their presious time and money to purchase the newest fashion trends.

In the building where I stay (a horrificly ugly building which can be found everywhere side by side to the futuristic office buildings) is a gathering of people of all races. Indians, africans, arabs, you name it, it's there (according to the New York Times it is a prime example of succesful multi cultural coexistence with its 120 nationalities in one building). The reason why, cheap accomodation and plenty of business opportunities... Luckily I've grown immune to hustling.

To get a break from the madness I went -together with an American which I met on the airport- on a track just outside of the city, yes it was a proper hike in Hong Kong!!! It's called the Dragons Back and is a good walk in the coastal hills with excellent sights over the area. After an exhausting 3 1/2 hours walk we ended up at the local beach resort, where all the Hong Kongnese go sun bathing (strange for Asians), so we had a dip aswell. Pretty funny, hey!!!

I have to stay here for another 6 days... before I fly to Africa and that seems like an eternity. But I think I'll be able to enjoy myself the next couple of days in this Neon City, with its 35 degrees tempertures, high humidity and the only rain that falls down is the condens from the hundreds and thousants of air conditionings hanging outside of the huge buildings. It's just like walking in a sf movie or a dream (or nightmare, hahaha).

Next time more news from the Dark or Mother Continent. Kisses,

Tim

    Tim:

Vandaag weer samen op pad, cool he? Hou jullie op de hoogte!!! Kus.
